About us

On 1 February 2017 Adv. Gerrie Nel was appointed as the head of AfriForum’s newly established Private Prosecution Unit.

One of the reasons that necessitated the establishment of the unit was the fact that corruption was spreading like a cancer within the Zuma government and it was quickly forcing the country to its knees. Corruption does not only have financial consequences, it impacts the entire society.

The purpose of the Private Prosecution Unit is to institute prosecution whenever the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), fails to prosecute persons (especially those with political ties and high profiles), without valid reasons. The unit’s objectives are amongst others to identify corruption among high-ranking government officials, to have corruption charges investigated by experienced investigators, to ensure that criminal charges are filed, to apply pressure for prosecution by exposing corruption in the public, as well as to conduct public campaigns against corruption.

Without strong watchdog institutions, impunity becomes the very foundation upon which systems of corruption are built. And if impunity is not demolished, all efforts to bring an end to corruption will be in vain. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit will, if necessary, prosecute cases when the state fails to do so.
